I had the privilige of catching the second baby of the new year at the clinic (happy birthday to my Mom as well). Her mother was endorsed to me at shift change and she seemed like she was just about ready to have a baby. My supervisor examined her and found that she was only 4 cm dilated – we had a ways to go. After reassuring her that she was doing well, but she needed to try and breathe through her contractions, I decided I would have ample time to eat some breakfast. I had just managed to pour milk on my oatmeal and take two bites when I heard her pushing. Despite our attempts to get her to stop, she persisted, and fifteen minutes later I caught little Sabina. Her mother was not in the best shape after that so Sabina got to hang out with me for quite awhile while I worked on paperwork, examined her, and my supervisor stitched her mother back together. After everyone was finally settled in postpartum, Sabina got a visit from her very proud grandmother who told me happily about her 4 grandsons and how excited she was to have her first granddaughter. Today Sabina and her mother returned for a checkup – where I finally found out her name. Her parents had been expecting a little boy and had only picked boy names. Both mom and baby girl seem to be doing great.
