I reached a tiny little milestone last week when I wiggled my 9th catch free of his mother – this was the 50th birth I had been at since I arrived here in August! I didn’t even notice this until the next day when I had time to sit down and finish filling out my own records that I keep. Unfortunately for little Vince he came out with a distinctly blue colour. My supervisor (also my assist in this birth) rubbed him vigorously all over and gave him a bit of oxygen. He started to pink up but still had yet to cry so Ate May flicked the bottoms of his little feet and cajoled, “come on baby, come on baby, cry please”. Shortly after he complied and issued a small whine of annoyance – but not good enough for Ate May! She continued bugging him until he issued a lusty, complaining squall and turned a nice shade of red. Vince proved to be the biggest baby I have caught yet – weighing in at 8lbs 2oz. For here this is a pretty big baby. Yesterday was Vince’s 5 day checkup and I really hope you will help me pray for him. I couldn’t find anything particularly wrong with him, but his breathing was fast and he seemed very lethargic and floppy. The supervisor also looked at him and after pulling a few tricks out of her sleeve, we finally decided to refer him to the doctor. Please pray that his mom will be able to take him to see a doctor so we can be sure that he is ok. He could very well just be a calm, happy baby who was tired and lazy – and I certainly hope this is the case!
