When I sat down this morning intending to eventually update my blog I didn’t expect eventually to mean 12 hours later. Half way through my morning computer rounds (email, Facebook, blogs etc) my phone buzzed. “Larissa, your bb check is here” I gathered my stuff and on a whim, added the books and papers I would need for my afternoon class/clinic. As I stood at the main road waiting for a jeepney to come by, a blue car pulled over. I could just make out a silhouette through the tinted window – too tall to be a native. Sure enough when I peeked in the door it was Matt, the husband of our director. I said a very thankful prayer for a quick, non-squishy, and free ride to the clinic. From that point on the day began to get very long. Having not expected my baby check so soon, I had not gotten around to eating breakfast. I managed a quick sprint to a nearby bakery between the first baby check and the second one – which I was not expecting. In the midst of the second baby check Ate An-An popped her head between the curtains and said “Larissa, another baby check for you” At the same time as inwardly groaning I was glad that baby Izack and his parents had finally turned up after neglecting to attend their past three baby checks. I was happy to note that Izack had gained back the weight he lost and passed his birthweight. Finally I settled on the couch in the birth room with some lunch that one of my classmates had brought me. Noodles never tasted so good. Then it was off to the store to pick up some supplies for our clinic/class. The afternoon passed by in a blur as I interviewed, poked, swished, swirled and yes, fumbled my way through a physical exam clinic. Although exhausting, it went much better than I had anticipated. The very first patient that I led into the cubicle happened to be a physical exam veteran. There was no hiding the fact that I was not a physical exam veteran from her. Instead she announced that she was not shy and proceeded to direct me through half the steps herself. After most of the patients had been attended to, our class enjoyed a break for some coke and snacks before cleaning up. A lighthearted book and my bed were just the thing for the next hour while I waited for dinner. It wasn’t long after dinner that I sat down and finally picked up where I left off when I fled the dorm hastily 12 hours earlier.
