Well, I have been here for just a little more than 3 days. It is good to be back. I would even venture to say that I am home. My heart is happy here. After 30 hours on planes and in airports I emerged into the muggy heat that engulfs the city. A familiar face was there to pick me up and bring me to my temporary living quarters. Several kind women helped me drag my heavy bags up a flight of stairs where they pointed out my bed. Exhaustion and disbelief nearly caused me to laugh out loud…someone had made up the bed for me…with the sheets I had left behind over two years ago. I thought I must be wrong, for what kind of coincidence is that? But as I hauled myself up the ladder onto the bunk, my eyes fell on a very distinctive stain. I clearly remembered the night I had squished a mosquito in that very place, and no amount of washing ever removed the evidence.
Today I set off in the morning for my first official day back – Prenatal Clinic. With some changes having been made over the last few years, I spent the morning shadowing one of the midwives. What a joy it is to be back in a room filled with the amplified sounds of little beating hearts and the chatter of midwives caring for moms and babies.
